Monument to the Victims of the Rwandan Genocide
No event has had such an impact on Rwandan history as the 1994 civil war. Within 100 days, in the presence of a UN peacekeeping force, the Hutu massacred more than one million Tutsis on purpose. The Kigali Genocide Remembrance Center is dedicated to one of the bloodiest genocides in world history.
The Memorial Center for the Remembrance of the Victims of Genocide was opened in 2004 on the day of the 10th anniversary of the genocide. The center is located in the suburbs of Gisozi, in the very place where the last refuge of 250,000 people was found in a mass grave - a number that is beyond imagination. The center's exposition, divided into three sections, tells how this happened: how the tension between the ethnic groups of this small African state grew, what gav Vests in Rwanda e rise to the genocide, and how this tragedy unfolded under the close supervision of a significant number of UN peacekeepers.

After the country gained independence in 1962, the Hut majority revolted with a demand to expel the Tutsi elite. During the rule of the Hutu, an extremely tense situation persisted, and the UN decided to send peacekeepers to the country. On April 6, 1994, the plane of Hutu President Juvenal Habyariman was shot down while approaching the airport, which heated the already tense situation to the limit. The Tutsis and Hutu began killing each other with machetes and dumping their bodies into pits. Due to the limited mandate and, to an even greater extent, the indifference of the UN member states to the unfolding carnage, the peacekeeping forces did not intervene, which led to disastrous consequences.
"Back in the 15th century, Rwanda was ruled by a Tutsi king who oppressed the Hutu."
The exposition of the center tells about the drama
The exposition of the center tells about the events that preceded the genocide, how the bloody massacre unfolded and what happened after the completion of this black page of the history of Rwanda. You can also visit a number of other places related to the history of the genocide. One of them is the Hotel de Mille Collins. Today it is one of the fashionable Kempinski hotels, but in 1994 it became a refuge for Tutsi refugees. These events are recreated in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda. The former presidential palace now houses a museum, and the wreckage of the presidential plane can be seen in the garden. The National Genocide Memorial and Monument / Memorial Center are located 30 kilometers from Kigali in Nyamata.
