These studies evaluated the effect of higher omega-3 intake versus lower or no omega-3 intake on cardiovascular disease. EPA and DHA slightly lower serum triglycerides and raise HDL cholesterol (high-quality evidence). Eating more alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) (such as walnuts or fortified margarine) probably has little or no effect on all-cause deaths, cardiovascular deaths or coronary deaths, or coronary events, but likely , slightly reduces cardiovascular events and heart rhythm disturbances (moderate / low quality evidence). The effect of ALA on strokes is unclear as the evidence was very low quality. There is evidence that taking omega-3 capsules does not reduce heart disease, strokes, or death. There is little evidence for the effect of eating fish. Although EPA and DHA lower triglyceride levels, omega-3 fatty acid supplements are probably not helpful in preventing or treating cardiovascular disease.
